The practice of forensic psychology relates to the application of psychological techniques and methods to criminality and the justice system, with the aim of understanding the mental state, motivations and processes that stimulate and cause criminal behaviour. People who work in this area are often referred to as ‘criminal psychologists’. A good deal of the perceived nature of the job seems to be around criminal profiling but this is by no means the only important aspect. How criminal behaviour is assessed and treated is also an integral part of the process.
This Diploma takes a research perspective on the subject; it commences with a short introduction to methodologies together with a basic explanation of statistics relating to research. The course goes on to examine the psychology of crimes of violence and offers the chance for participants to engage in their own research project to uncover links between violent crime and a specific mental disorder. This online course includes sections on serial killers, substance abuse and serious crime, child abuse and criminal responsibility and the psychiatric defences that have been used in criminal trials.
